AI and discovery

What happens when a customer asks AI before asking you?

Being mentioned, getting a visit and winning a customer are different outcomes. Give people clear answers and a reason to come to you.

Aligned openings in paper panels reveal a red doorway.

When I started thinking about this website, I kept coming back to what someone should get from visiting it. I could tell my story and offer a meeting. But people are protective of their time, and I wanted them to leave with something useful before asking for a conversation.

That is why the free business check starts with questions and ends with a suggested action. The value has to be in the advice that follows, not just in getting someone to finish a form.

AI search makes that question more pressing. If someone can get a general explanation without visiting your website, what would make your page worth opening?

What is AI search visibility?

AI search visibility means whether a business or its information appears in answers produced by AI-powered search services. Being mentioned, being cited and receiving a visit are different outcomes. None, on its own, tells you whether the visitor became a suitable customer.

Google says its existing SEO foundations apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode: accessible pages, helpful content and information that search systems can understand. It does not require a special AI text file or a new kind of structured data to appear in those features. Eligibility does not guarantee inclusion. Read Google’s guidance on AI features.

For a service business, a sensible starting point is an accurate explanation of the offer, supported by useful evidence and a website that is easy to use.

An answer can help someone without sending you a visit

Pew Research Center examined browsing by 900 US adults in March 2025. Traditional search-result links received clicks on 8% of visits with an AI summary, compared with 15% without one. It was observational research, and the researchers reconstructed search results later. It is a reason to examine changing search behaviour, not a prediction that every business will lose the same share of traffic. See Pew’s findings and method.

That also means traffic alone gives an incomplete picture. Track useful enquiries and customer outcomes alongside visits. Ask new customers how they found you, leaving room for more than one source. Someone may hear about you at an event, ask an AI about your work and later search your name.

Make the offer easy to understand and verify

Read your main service page as if you had never met the team. Can you tell who the service is for, which problem it addresses, what the work includes and what happens next? If pricing depends on scope, explain what determines that scope rather than leaving the reader with an unexplained contact button.

Use your actual company and author names consistently. Put important explanations in readable page text. Add relevant internal links so people can move between the service, the people delivering it and examples of the work.

A case study should explain the starting situation, the intervention and what was observed. Include limits where they matter. A named example with an understandable method gives a reader more to evaluate than an unsupported claim about being the best.

Give people something specific to use

The Dario experience I have shared elsewhere changed how I think about pages. People needed to understand and trust the story. Removing the explanation because it looked too long would have missed the point.

That is a useful test for an AI-era website too. A short video explaining a real decision, a case study with context, or a worksheet that helps someone examine their own problem can give a visit a purpose. These formats still need useful content; calling something a tool does not make it helpful.

For this website, the practical starting point is a business check with a suggested action you can keep. It is guidance based on your answers, rather than a full diagnosis of a business I have not examined.

Measure visibility without promising rankings

Use Search Console to understand the search queries and pages bringing people in. Google’s AI-feature traffic is included in its Web performance reporting, so it should not be treated as a separately identified channel there. Combine that information with enquiries and customer feedback. See Google’s measurement guidance.

You can also periodically check a small, consistent set of relevant questions in AI services and record whether your business is described accurately. Answers can vary. A mention in one check is an observation, not a stable ranking or evidence of revenue.
